The following article appeared on Tune-In magazine c. October 1999 issue

Culture can be the diffusion of certain ideas, beliefs and of course art and creativity. This is what the party scene is all about. It involves people with the aim to create. Great music producers and DJs were born all over the world and here in Malta it’s no exception. However, it’s like the authorities have decided to demolish Hypogeum or Hagar Qim! It is part of a culture and lifestyle so there mustn’t be repression of a quite big number of people who are part of the entertainment business and also one of our main financial source of the island, tourism. The ultimate problem that the minority of the people caused with drugs and alcohol must be tackled differently from the regulations about time limits… Organiser for EXIT Promotions Desmond said “It’s not just the regulations. Lately I admit there were too much parties, and what’s more some of the promoters were trying to create something without specific knowledge or back-up from others to help them. They were amateurs and not ready for it.”

X-POSE Magazine returns after these new obstacles in the party scene. Ronald tells us: “Presently, the scene is undergoing massive surgery after the attack it suffered this summer. The worst part of all was that the situation was exploited by certain promoters who cried crocodile tears for sympathy attendance to their parties when all they really wanted was more income. However, the scene will evolve but never die.” In fact there is hope. After all a good number of passionate people cannot just stop their music, or entertaining in a different manner. The concept is changing and a whole lot of things may hopefully turn out better. Two new clubs Liquid and Club Divine are getting a good appreciation for their work.

There is also the return of Bar Funk. Lukan, manager of the club tells us that: “the most irritating aspect was that the regulations were put into action in the middle of Summer. And another thing. How can people go out if they work till late? There must be another set of places which open after four. Now we have to adapt ourselves and already we’ve got bar and music policies more on a professional level, securities with training and DJs managed by Fresh agency.” Gerry from the agency told us that to organise a party a large sum of money is involved. “The fixed costs - police, mobile toilets, Red Cross, security, venue. Lately I read on a newspaper that promoters can earn as much as Lm70,000! It’s impossible and seriously absurd! The affects of the new regulations are already being felt - budgets have been reduced for DJs plus a lot of other people involved in the scene excluding promoters: printers, designers, securities, bar attendants, advertisers…” DJs come out with the same opinion. Owen Jay explains that all of a sudden the scene sort of had a slap on the face. “The rapid changes led to an inconsistency in music style and what’s more there is less time allocated to local DJs.”

Pannik 1999 if not mistaken was in February? I'm not quite sure by it was beginning of the year 1999.

Before the party. Pannik 1999. Speedy J comes rehearsing some weird loops and then reaches the sound of Panic and Pullover… Monitors in their right place, perfectly programmed modules, all mixer connections ready preset… Speedy J is soon speaking to me about his deep technical sounds… some solutions for a good live act!

Mauro: How’s your feeling these few hours here in Malta?
Speedy J: I really like it. Right now I’m tired. I had to wake up at 4am to go to the airport and I had slept just a couple of hours as my working schedule goes from 12:00pm till 2:00am.
Mauro: What’s your favourite equipment for production?
Speedy J: It’s difficult to say cause for every purpose there is a different machine. However I like modules which have got a lot of possibilities to treat sounds, machines that don’t give themselves away so easily.
Mauro: So you prefer the analogue modular synths than the ready preset digital clones?
Speedy J: I like to work with analogue synths EMS and R26, stuff like that but I might use also new software synths that are coming out nowadays.
Mauro: Do you use a computer based system?
Speedy J: I’m flexible, I’ve got a bit of everything. Digital and analogue synths, drum machines, samplers, workstations, software…
Mauro: How do you label your style of music?
Speedy J: Well, I’d rather not label it because as soon as I do I restrict myself in coming up with new ideas. However, it’s probably electronic!
Mauro: Pretty general!
Speedy J: To classify my music I might say that my productions vary from both listening music and dance music.
Mauro: I never listened to any of your stuff before except Panic. These few minutes of rehearsal revealed some weird sounds and also basslines on the funkier side of techno more than the clean constant beat. Is this your personal style?
Speedy J: I’ve been recording albums for 6-7 years by now and my productions featured various roots in dance music but also a lot of listening music, ambient and dubby-funky stuff. It’s not a conscious thing but I just don’t like to do the same thing every day. It would be boring.
Mauro: I dare say distortion is one of your main techniques.
Speedy J: Not just distortion. I like when sounds are not recognisable, when sounds have a character. Distortion is just one method to give sounds a character.
Mauro: Your remixography?
Speedy J: Bjork, Depeche Mode, The Shamen, Micronauts…
Mauro: Have you got a label of your own?
Speedy J: I used to a few years ago. It was called Beam Me Up!
Mauro: What do you usually use as equipment for your live performances?
Speedy J: I like to bring as little equipment as possible. I designed the system by which I work live. Every machine has its specific job. One machine does rhythms and sequences, the second does the sounds and the third machine does effects plus a good mixing desk. It’s like DJing with 16 channels instead of two because all the music is arranged in loops and what happens is just me tweaking stuff from the mixer. Basically it’s 16 synchronised tracks which can be faded in and out like listening to eight DJs at one go!
Mauro: Countries that you played?
Speedy J: Basically around the world - America, Canada, Japan, Australia, almost every country in Europe mostly Holland, England, Germany and today Malta!
